Wait. Hold up. What Do You Mean Bubble Tea Can Give Me Cancer?!?!

As many of you probably already know, bubble tea is a delightful drink that can turn a wretched, miserable day into a sweet moment of chewy bliss. Unfortunately, I stumbled upon this article in last year's Daily News about these German scientists who found traces of PCB's in the tapioca bubbles of an unnamed popular brand of bubble tea.
SAY WHAAAAT?!

Okay, just calm down.
So PCB's (Polychlorinated biphenyls) are man-made chemical carcinogens which means they can cause cancer. The thing is there is this one study by German scientists who are ruining my favorite obsession. The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) investigated 66 other food products this year; 11 of the products that confirmed to contain PCB's were tapioca balls aka bubble tea bubbles. So right now, this is serious. This is a critical issue because somebody needs to get some peer-reviewed studies published. I mean, how am I supposed to know whether to support my bubble tea addiction or cut myself off cold turkey? Come on people... I need to see some more test results, pronto.

Chemistry Is Awesome.

Today in Chemistry we lit our hands on fire. Wooo!!!

This experiment is called methane bubbles. You create soap bubbles with methane gas and then light your hand on fire. Isn't it awesome?! The idea is to use this to illustrate the differences between chemicals and their properties, the importance of lab safety and do a really nice intro to combustion reactions.

In other words, DO NOT try this at home.

Monsanto is EVIL I tell you... EEEVIL!!!!

It's so sad (and absolutely ridiculous) that in our society money triumphs over morality. Take a look at this article in the Huffington Post about the renewal of the Monsanto Protection ActIf you do not like what you read and are outraged, you can do something about it by signing the petition on the Center for Food Safety website.

Welcome to Like O.M.G!! It's Science.

Hullo everyone! :)

I would like to welcome you to my blog, like OMG, it's science. This blog features posts of weird, interesting, and important scientific topics and finds. If you come across something that strikes your interest, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and finds with us.

To get started, let's have a look at this video of a bot fly removal. The magnificent bot fly peaked my interest when I read this book called the Lost City of Z, which is a non-fiction book about the British explorer Percy Fawcett, who ventured into the Amazon (along with many other crazy individuals who tried to find him after he and his crew disappeared) in search of the lost civilization, "Z". The book all in all had some dry parts, but what really had me going were the numerous accounts of individuals in his crew complaining about larvae crawling under their skin and eating them alive.

Okay, enough about the book, let's get to the good stuff...

I LOVE watching videos like this because you never know what's going to happen (unless, of course, you've seen the video already). And the best thing is that there are TONS of videos like this even more gross and disgusting. LOVE IT!!!
